What is crochet?

Crochet is a process of creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn, thread, or strands of other materials using a crochet hook. The name is taken from the French word "crochet", meaning small hook. When first introduced to the art of crochet, the terms, stitches, and patterns can be difficult to understand. This page, and this guide, attempts to shed light on a variety of crochet techniques, from casting on your first stitches to attempting a large afghan using a crochet chart. With a long and diverse history, crochet is also making its way into world-renowned museums and is the medium of choice for many skilled fiber artists.
